Fly Ash as a Soil Conditioner and Fertilizer

Mixing fly ash in soil can help farmers increase production of crops and vegetables at a time when fertilizer costs are soaring. Researchers in CSIR - Advanced Material Process Research Institute (AMPRI) Bhopal have been involved in Research and Development programme for effective utilization of fly ash generated from thermal power stations.

All these were achieved based on physico-chemical, mineralogical, morphological and biological properties of ash and soil. We already know that, with the use of fly ash, we have seen cement-free concrete and wood substitute, but these experiments used limited amount of fly ash.

Fly ash as Fertilizer

Fly ash serves as a good fertilizer. Because, it has great potentiality in agriculture due to its efficacy in modification of soil health and crop performance. It provides the uptake of vital nutrients/minerals (Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mo, S and Se) to crops and vegetation and can be considered as a potential growth improver.

Research proved that fly ash is a resourceful material and can be effectively utilized as soil modifier in large quantity and micro fertilizer in converting wasteland into agriculturally productive land. Best thing about fly ash is that, it retains water in ground and helps bacterial actions to take place to cultivate good quality of crops or vegetables.

Experiments and Testing

After several experiments and testing, the crop responded to various elements, mainly heavy metals grown in soil and fly ash were found to be within the permissible limits, no toxicity, meeting the food nutrition's and quality.

With fly ash application, edible yield of tomato, cabbage, potato, wheat, pea, onion, paddy, sunflower, maize etc were increased considerably as compared to the control soil where no fly ash was used.

Presently, fly ash has been used in agriculture in various parts of the country.

Conclusion:

There are several potential beneficial and few harmful effects of fly ash application in soil.
However, the effects of ash addition on soil health and crop productivity need to be established with long-term studies.

Recycling Coal Plant Residue to make Bricks

For the past few decades, we are using fly ash bricks instead of clay bricks because of light weight, high strength, uniformity and less consumption of mortar plastering. These are the common understanding many of you known about fly ash bricks. Let's go deeply about in what way fly ash brick is better than conventional clay bricks.

Clay bricks vs. Fly ash Bricks

Clay bricks are manufactured by using the fertile top soil and are made in sheds. Continuing use of clay bricks will lead to extensive loss of fertile top soil and no fertile land for future agriculture. Deforestation also occurs in search of soil source for clay brick manufacturing. Unlike clay bricks, fly ash bricks are made through a mechanized manufacturing process. So, weather variation does not affect the brick manufacturing process.

Moreover clay bricks have no quality testing facilities, so its quality can't be guessed. Whereas, fly ash bricks are manufactured using pre-programmed hydraulic machines. Bricks from these machines are tested for its quality and durability.

Why Fly ash Bricks?

Fly-ash, an unwanted residue obtained from coal-fired power plants. By adding cement, lime, water, gypsum with fly ash to make bricks. These bricks are lighter and stronger, and they reduce the plastering cost by 30 percent.

Fly-ash bricks are increasingly gaining acceptance in construction because of cost effective, durable, fire and moisture resistant and most importantly environment friendly. With the restriction on the use of clay in manufacturing of bricks, Fly Ash Brick is a best substitute for it.

With the excessive amount of fly ash released every year from coal-fired power plants, luckily we got an option to turn this ash residue into useful construction material. Yes, by promoting the usage of fly ash bricks in our construction industry we could enjoy the benefits of this innovative technology and save our environment.

To keep the cost of building materials in reasonable range, we should opt in for alternative building materials like fly ash bricks and hollow or solid blocks.

Effect of Fly Ash on the Properties of Fresh Concrete

The use of good quality fly ash with a high fineness and low carbon content reduces the water demand of concrete and consequently, the use of fly ash should permit the concrete to be produced at lower water content when compared to a portland cement concrete of the same workability.

Benefits of Fly ash used in Portland Cement Concrete:

Use of fly ash in Portland cement concrete (PCC) has many benefits and improves concrete performance in both the fresh and hardened state. Fly ash use in concrete improves the workability of plastic concrete, and the strength and durability of hardened concrete. Fly ash use is also cost effective. When Fly ash is added to concrete, the amount of Portland cement may be reduced.

Mix Design for Fly Ash based Concrete:

Use of Fly ash along with cement helps to provide specific properties like reduced early heat of hydration, increased long term strength, increased resistance to alkali aggregate reaction and sulphate attack, reduced permeability, resistance to the intrusion of aggressive solutions and also economy.

Salient advantage of using fly ash in cement concrete:
  • Reduction in heat of hydration and thus reduction of thermal cracks and improves soundness of concrete mass.
  • Improved workability / pumpabilty of concrete
  • Converting released lime from hydration of OPC into additional binding material - contributing additional strength to concrete mass.
